Our History
The Family
Desperados Mexican Restaurant has been serving Dallas area residents real dishes from the heart of Mexico and traditional Tex-Mex favorites for more than 40 years. Desperados’ landmark status has been achieved through the determination and vision of Jorge Levy who, along with two partners, opened the doors to the now historic Greenville Avenue location in 1976.
The Food
This family is very passionate about what they do and that passion is evident throughout many aspects of their business. However it is the recipes that have elevated Desperados to its status as a Delicious Dallas Original. The menu is large, sampling much of the culinary diversity of Mexico. “We were one of the first to ever serve Ceviche,” Jorge boasts. And with award winning specialties like the delicious Guacamole, tangy Steak Argentina, world famous Desperados Tacos and a Terlingua Champion Chili you are sure to find something scrumptious.
The Catering
Desperados Catering has a successful lineage spanning the entire length of the restaurant’s history. They were a favorite of Ron Chapman and KVIL radio back in the 70’s and 80’s. Tatu, GordanJago and the rest of the Dallas Sidekicks regularly enjoyed Desperados’ Tacos. More recently the family has become a mainstay on Sports Radio 1310 the Ticket, as well as serving their original family recipes to our very own Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Texas Rangers and for almost 10 years they have been favorite of Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks. They were even chosen to represent their city when the NFL came to Dallas during both Superbowl XLV in 2011 and the NFL Draft in 2018.

Faces of Diversity Award
The Faces of Diversity Award was created by the National Restaurant Association to raise awareness about the important role restaurants play in providing opportunity to those trying to realize their American Dream. In 2012 this award was bestowed to our founder Jorge Levy in recognition of his American Dream. We consider this to be a great honor and we could not be more proud of Jorge.
